Healing Together: Family Therapy for Addiction

Addiction is a family disease. Our family program is designed to repair relationships, restore trust, and build a strong, supportive foundation for your loved one’s long term recovery.

Addiction Does Not Happen in a Vacuum

Anyone who has had a family member struggling with addiction knows that it is a family disease. It impacts everyone within the unit, destroying trust and severing relationships. Family counseling is dedicated to families who have endured this hardship and need assistance in moving forward.

Loved ones of addicts are frequently deceived, neglected, and taken advantage of throughout active addiction. When a loved one begins to descend the addiction slope, it can stir up unhealthy feelings and reactions. Family connections must be restored so that recovering individuals can have a loving support network. During addiction treatment, our Asheville rehabilitation center provides counseling services that assist in family healing, addiction education, and maintaining a healthy support system.

Weekly Family Support Group

We encourage all families to participate in our weekly support meetings via Zoom, providing a space for education and shared experience.

The Benefits of Family Therapy in Recovery

Family support can increase an individual’s confidence, provide someone to talk to honestly, and encourage them to pursue their goals in sobriety. It also allows family members to learn more about addiction, reflect on themselves, and develop strategies to make their family unit stronger than before.

Educate the Family

Understanding the nature of addiction and its ramifications helps prevent future behavioral problems and promotes empathy.

Improve Communication

Effective communication is essential in a system where there may have been none. Therapy helps families learn to listen and express themselves healthily.

Restore Trust

Dishonesty and substance abuse are often linked. Open communication, honest interaction, and witnessing positive change can help mend this breach.

Express Emotions

Therapy provides a safe space for family members to express complex emotions like anger and fear, and to find hope for reconciliation.

Set Healthy Boundaries

Setting boundaries is difficult but essential for a healthy recovery for the entire family. Our therapists guide you through this important process.

Practice Self-Care

Family therapy often reveals that parents or spouses also need support. We can recommend resources like Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and individual therapy.

How Family Therapy Works

There are many ways that family counseling is utilized within the addiction treatment process. The entire family may meet with a therapist, or only part of the family may meet. A therapist meets with each family for about an hour in each session, but the meetings may vary in structure depending on the familyโ€™s unique needs. In one session, the entire family might discuss their feelings and concerns, whereas, in another meeting, the therapists may educate them on effective communication to decrease miscommunications.

Components of Family Counseling in Asheville, NC

  • Family Engagement: We work to get the whole family invested in the recovery process, revisiting goals and ensuring everyone feels heard.
  • Relational Reframing: We help alter the way people think about problems, focusing on family relationships rather than individuals to understand why people behave the way they do.
  • Family Behavior Change: We teach concrete new skills and encourage individual behavior changes to improve family relationships, with positive reinforcement and coaching.
  • Family Restructuring: We aim to alter the way the family is governed by changing fundamental beliefs and rules, encouraging members to recognize and change maladaptive patterns.
